What to Expect
Massage is a very personal and individual experience. Your massage session is also confidential; I don't discuss any client or session with others, unless with a requested signed release.
You will be asked to fill out a brief health/personal history form.
Massage is contraindicated with some conditions/injuries or when taking
certain medications. Please be sure to tell me of any allergies; I try to use all hypoallergenic products.
We will spend a few minutes together discussing whatever has brought you in for a massage; stress, injury, chronic pain, headache, etc. Please ask questions or voice any concerns.
After agreeing on a general session plan (i.e. full body relaxation work, a full session of deep tissue on upper body only, or perhaps focus on neck and feet...each session is different) I will leave the room while you get comfortable on the massage table. It is a good idea to have a relatively empty bladder and stomach before starting a massage; don't eat a huge meal immediately prior and use the rest room if necessary (available just down the hall).
The table is set up much like a single bed and you lie between the sheets. You are covered at all times to maintain comfort and modesty; only the body part being worked on is exposed.
Some clients prefer to leave underwear on, many disrobe completely.
Remember the buttock area is filled with muscles whose health is
integral to the well being of one's legs and back! We will discuss what is appropriate and comfortable for you.
When prone (face down) you will place your face in a U-shaped cradle to allow your neck to be in good alignment; when on your back (supine) your head will rest directly on the table. Or we may decide that a side lying position is best. Feel free to ask for an additional blanket if you are chilled, the music to be changed or the face cradle to be adjusted. It is not uncommon for clients to request a tissue for a runny nose or a small pillow under the abdomen. It is important that you are comfortable and are able to relax and focus on the sensations of your breath and body.
I will work in relative silence, usually checking in with you once or twice to see if the pressure is suitable. I may ask you to move a body part, but most often I will move a limb to allow better access or palpation. I know it is hard not to 'help', but it is usually best to let the body be as limp and 'heavy' as possible. Don't hesitate to tell me if you experience pain or tingling; it may be a trigger point or I may need to adjust how I am working.
When I am finished, I will leave the room while you get dressed. Please take an extra moment to lie still and breath deeply before slowly and carefully sitting up and then getting dressed; take in any changes in your body, make a mental note of your relaxed state. When you're ready, open the door and we'll handle payment and any rescheduling. I will provide you with a glass of cool, clean water; extra water is a good idea following a circulation boosting massage.
Regarding tips: I am a sole proprietor. I have set my fees to reflect what I think is a fair price in exchange for a professional service. Tipping is not necessary nor expected, but of course is graciously appreciated. I would actually prefer you to pass my business card on to your friends or coworkers if you have had a good experience with me!
